2025: The Year of H Street? A Wave of Fresh Openings Is Revitalizing the Corridor (#61)
Also in this issue you will find more good news, events, promotions, and a blog article on ALDI.
H Street has always been full of character, but 2025 feels like a renaissance. Since January, the NE corridor has welcomed a parade of new dining and retail spots that promise to reshape the street’s vibe. Here's a roundup of what’s open:
Tapori
The soul from South Asia hit H Street this winter. Tapori offers vibrant street‑food fare spanning from Kerala to Nepal — think pani puri, dosas, thukpa — alongside tiki‑inspired cocktails infused with hibiscus and chaat masala.
Dolcezza Gelato & Soft‑Serve
Arrived mid‑March at 600 H St NE, bringing artisanal gelato made from locally sourced ingredients — and debuting an inventive soft‑serve concept featuring flavors like pistachio butter with salty crumble and passionfruit mousse. With cozy indoor seating and an upbeat lobby setting, it’s already become a magnet for families and flavor seekers.
Tango Pastry
Grand opening on April 13 at 408 H St NE, this Argentine‑style bakery by Chef Katriel Menendez serves empanadas, alfajores, medialunas, churros, and more, with a soft launch now seeing extended hours.
Henceforth Brewery & Wine Bar
Once the cozy H Street Country Club, the revamped two‑floor space at 1335 H St NE now houses Henceforth — complete with a rooftop coming soon, 12 draft lines, and an emphasis on back‑backed seating and upscale brewing aesthetics. Expect finely crafted ales from a Great American Beer Festival–winning brewer.
Feru Ethiopian Cuisine
A new Ethiopian restaurant at 1128 H St NE opened in early May, offering authentic meat and veggie dishes with long hours, including late-night service
ALDI
The much-anticipated Aldi at 801 H St NE officially launched on June 5, 2025, marking a milestone for H Street’s neighborhood redevelopment.
Open Crumb
A West African–American scratch kitchen helmed by Chef Peter Opare opened its doors on June 11, 2025, offering comfort-food riffs with rich, flavorful roots. Operating Tue–Sun (12 PM–9 PM), it’s already become buzzy on neighborhood Instagram and praised for bringing “expertly crafted West African cuisine” to H Street.
Tiffany’s Bistro & Bar
This modern Bistro & Bar welcomed diners with a soft opening beginning June 14, 2025, in the space former home to Po’Boy Jim’s. Plans include a 149-seat dining area plus a 20-seat summer garden, making it a great new option for indoor/outdoor bites.
Sushi Sato
Launched on July 1, 2025, Sushi Sato is D.C.’s first bottomless all-you-can-eat sushi bar, led by chef Tim Ma of Lucky Danger fame. For $55 or $75, diners get 90 minutes of high-quality nigiri, rolls, sashimi, plus grilled dishes and a third-floor patio bar—all in the former Bronze space.
Double Up Burger
Opened up this week at Hiraya’s former space. Swing by for a wagyu smash burger and milk tea combo.
Two Local Favorites Return to H Street in 2025
H Street is experiencing not just a wave of new businesses—but the return of two beloved culinary staples that neighbors have missed. Here’s what’s back:
Smokin’ Pig BBQ
After a hiatus, Smokin’ Pig BBQ is back and smokier than ever. Known for its tender, slow-cooked meats and signature sauces, this H Street favorite has reclaimed its place as a go-to for ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and more. Whether you're dining in or grabbing a takeout platter for the weekend, Smokin’ Pig delivers serious comfort food with a side of nostalgia.
Jerk at Nite
A late-night legend returns! Jerk at Nite is once again serving up its bold Jamaican-inspired dishes right here on H Street. Expect flavorful jerk chicken, oxtail, mac & cheese, and plantains—all perfect for satisfying cravings after dark. It's more than a meal—it's a vibe. And judging by the early crowd and strong online buzz, H Street couldn't be happier to welcome it back.
