Community Connection: H Street Open Bar Volley & Leveling the Playing Field (#15)
Also in this edition you can sign up for the H Street Heroes clean up on Saturday at Binge Bar, as well as get update on events and promotions on H Street.
We’re thrilled to introduce two key figures who are making a significant impact on our neighborhood. Hannah the Hare, the beloved Social Bunny of “H Street, Sweet H Street,” is here to share the exciting details of the upcoming H Street Open Bar Volley—a one-of-a-kind event that blends community fun with charitable giving. Alongside her, we have Will McBeath from Leveling the Playing Field (LPF), an inspiring organization dedicated to providing sports equipment to underserved communities. Together, they’ll give us a glimpse into how this event is set to benefit local youth sports programs and bring the H Street community closer than ever.
Harriet the Hedgehog: Welcome, Hannah! You’re always in the know about what’s happening on H Street. What’s been keeping you busy lately?
Hannah the Hare: Thanks for having me! I've been hopping around to different bars and restaurants, participating in H Street Bingo, and checking out the new Hakuna Matata. We’ve been planning the H Street Open Bar Volley, which I’m super excited about. It’s been all about exploring H Street, enjoying good food, and having fun.
Harriet: Speaking of the Open Bar Volley, can you tell us more about it and why it’s generating so much buzz?
Hannah: Absolutely! The H Street Open Bar Volley is a unique event that combines a fun day-drinking experience with a great cause—supporting youth sports through LPF. We have six participating bars, each offering drink specials and themed decorations. All ticket proceeds go directly to LPF. It’s a fantastic way to bring the community together while highlighting both new and established bars on H Street.
Harriet: What makes this event stand out compared to others on H Street?
Hannah: This event is special because it’s more than just a bar crawl. It’s about giving back to our community and supporting local youth sports programs. The bars have welcomed us with open arms, offering themed drinks and specials tailored to our event. Plus, it’s a great way to enjoy H Street with friends and neighbors, all while contributing to a worthy cause.
Harriet: Any insider tips for those planning to attend?
Hannah: Definitely! Start early, stay hydrated, and use rideshare or public transportation like the H Street Streetcar. And don’t forget to come in a tennis or sports-themed outfit—it’s all part of the fun!
Harriet: How can people get involved in the event?
Hannah: Tickets are going fast, so keep an eye out for the Eventbrite link and grab yours as soon as possible. We’re also looking for sponsors to help ensure all proceeds go directly to LPF. If anyone’s interested, they can email me at hannahtheharehstreet@gmail.com.
Harriet: Thanks, Hannah. Now, Will, can you tell us more about Leveling the Playing Field’s mission?
Will McBeath: Sure! LPF is like a food bank for sporting equipment. We collect and redistribute new and used sports gear to under-resourced schools and youth programs, free of charge. This helps these programs reallocate funds to other areas, like transportation or additional staff, which increases both accessibility and participation in sports.
Harriet: How do donations specifically benefit the communities you serve?
Will: Donations allow us to provide free equipment to programs that need it, which in turn enables them to use their limited resources in other vital areas. This can lead to increased participation in sports, more diverse programming, and even the ability to offer new sports to kids who might not have had access otherwise.
Harriet: What are some of the biggest challenges LPF faces, and how can the H Street community help?
Will: The biggest challenge is always supply—meeting the high demand for equipment. Beyond monetary donations, we need equipment donations. People can find donation bins on our website, and we always appreciate volunteers to help in our warehouse. Following us on social media and staying engaged through our newsletter is also a great way to support us.
Harriet: What are some upcoming initiatives our listeners should know about?
Will: We’re focusing on back-to-school season, ensuring schools have the equipment they need. We’re also pushing a sports bra initiative and have an online auction coming up in the fall with great sports memorabilia. Stay tuned!
Harriet: Thanks, Will and Hannah. I’m looking forward to the H Street Open Bar Volley on August 31st. It sounds like it’s going to be a fantastic event for a great cause!
Will & Hannah: Thank you! See you there!
