Giving Is Always in Season: Non-Profits to Support on H Street
The holiday season is a time of reflection, gratitude, and giving back. While Giving Tuesday may have passed, the opportunity to make an impact in your community is always present. H Street is home to several incredible non-profits that enrich our neighborhood through arts, advocacy, and access to essential resources. Here are five organizations that deserve your support this holiday season and beyond, along with ways you can help through time and treasure.
1. HIPS (hips.org)
HIPS has been a cornerstone in providing harm reduction services and advocacy for sex workers and drug users in D.C. Their compassionate approach offers nonjudgmental support, including access to health services, education, and advocacy. Your donation helps fund critical programs like mobile outreach and case management. If you have time to give, they’re always looking for volunteers to assist with community outreach and administrative support.
2. Atlas Performing Arts Center (atlasarts.org)
The Atlas Performing Arts Center is the beating heart of artistic expression on H Street. By supporting Atlas, you’re investing in local theater, dance, music, and visual arts programs that enrich the lives of our community members. Donations help sustain these programs, and volunteering opportunities abound, from ushering at performances to assisting with community events.
3. Mosaic Theater Company (mosaictheater.org)
Mosaic Theater champions socially relevant plays that spark dialogue and inspire change. Their productions often highlight underrepresented voices and challenge audiences to think deeply about societal issues. Your financial contributions keep these powerful stories alive. You can also support Mosaic by becoming a member of their Front of House team, helping with audience services during performances.
4. Joy of Motion Dance Center (joyofmotion.org)
Joy of Motion is dedicated to making dance education and performance accessible to everyone. From youth classes to adult workshops, they foster creativity and build community through movement. Your donations help provide scholarships for students and support their mission of inclusivity. Volunteers can assist with events, marketing, or administrative tasks.
5. FreshFarm (freshfarm.org)
FreshFarm’s farmer’s markets connect D.C. residents with local, sustainable food options while supporting regional farmers. Their FoodPrints program brings farm-to-school education to life for children. Donations help expand access to fresh, healthy food for underserved communities. Volunteering at a FreshFarm market is a great way to meet neighbors and support the local food economy.
How You Can Make a Difference
Time: Many of these organizations thrive on volunteer support. Whether you can give an hour a week or assist with one-time events, your time can make a big impact.
Treasure: Financial contributions help sustain and grow the essential programs these non-profits provide. Even small donations add up to significant change.
Patronage: Support non-profits through patronage, such as attending performances or shopping at markets.
This holiday season, let’s come together as a community to support the non-profits that make H Street a vibrant, caring, and creative place to live. Giving is always in season—why not start today?
