This issue also includes more good news, events, promotions, AND DETAILS ON H STREET SWEET H STREET GIVEAWAY PROMOTION!
Join us as Harriet the Hedgehog sits down with Rachel Pearl, Marketing Director at Atlas Performing Arts Center, to discuss the center's remarkable achievements and exciting future. With an impressive 15 nominations at the Helen Hayes Awards, including three prestigious wins, Atlas Performing Arts Center continues to be a beacon of creativity and excellence in the DC arts scene. Rachel shares insights on these recent successes, the significant contributions of Jane Lang, and the thrilling Atlas Lab Performances slated for this summer.
Interview:
Harriet the Hedgehog: Congratulations on the recent Helen Hayes Award nominations! How does it feel to have 15 nominations for performances at Atlas?
Rachel Pearl: Thank you. We’re thrilled so many local performing artists have found success presenting at Atlas.
Harriet the Hedgehog: Three of those nominations turned into Helen Hayes Award wins. Can you share your thoughts on these specific wins and what they mean for Atlas?
Rachel Pearl: These wins mean the world to us. One of the wins was for Solas Nua’s The Honey Trap, artistically directed by Rex Daugherty, who’s an Atlas Arts Lab fellow this season.
Harriet the Hedgehog: Can you share some highlights or standout moments from the nominated performances?
Rachel Pearl: These wins are a testament to the creativity and dedication of the DC performing arts scene. They are provocative and multicultural and just what today needs.
Harriet the Hedgehog: How does receiving 15 Helen Hayes Award nominations impact Atlas Performing Arts Center and its community?
Rachel Pearl: We’re almost entirely booked for the next season!
Harriet the Hedgehog: Jane Lang recently received the Capitol Hill Community Foundation's "Community Achievement Award". Can you tell us more about her contributions and legacy at Atlas Performing Arts Center?
Rachel Pearl: How much time do you have!? Jane Lang is an integral part of our history – it was Jane who back in the early 2000s financed the massive renovation and revision of Atlas. Later, Atlas would be the catalyst for the rebirth of H Street NE. The city has a lot to thank Jane for!
Harriet the Hedgehog: What does this award mean to Jane Lang personally and to the Atlas Performing Arts Center as a whole?
Rachel Pearl: It’s a profound acknowledgment of her vision and commitment, both personally for Jane and institutionally for Atlas.
Harriet the Hedgehog: How does Atlas plan to build on these recent successes in the upcoming summer season?
Rachel Pearl: We have an exciting lineup for the summer, starting with shows like Tom’s Elton Tribute – a tribute to Elton John.
Harriet the Hedgehog: Can you give us a preview of the Atlas Lab Performances scheduled for this summer?
Rachel Pearl: Absolutely! This summer brings a diverse array of performances. Join our newsletter to be the first to know when tickets go on sale: Atlas Newsletter Signup
Harriet the Hedgehog: What can audiences expect from the Atlas Lab Performances in terms of variety and innovation?
Rachel Pearl: From Hip Hop to classical Indian dance, LINKED is all about connection. The Well is a musical memoir that explores addiction and the hope of forgiveness. Nothing You Desire will feature excerpts, conversation, and artmaking around a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It about gender, queer art, and being afraid to want things. And finally, the syBLINGS will bring ritual and music to the stage to help us all get free!
Stay tuned for more updates and join us in celebrating the vibrant artistic community at Atlas Performing Arts Center.
